Though the Worldwide Economic Crisis seems to have the world in a tizzy of worry and despair, Gringos are still coming to Mexico. I remember last year at this time unprecedented numbers of Gringos were walking the streets of my adopted Mexican home of Guanajuato. The city of Guanajuato, that bears the same name as the state, Guanajuato, had swarms of Gringos that extended from late Spring into early Fall even while gloom and doom spread all over the planet.

Statistics for 2008 will be forthcoming in the Spring. But, if subjective observation is to count for anything, it appeared to all the Mexicans and American Expats with whom we spoke that 2008 seemed the year for the most visible tourists in years.

In previous years (2006-2007), the average age of tourists to Guanajuato was under 36 years old. These tourists came to Guanajuato in 2006 in groups of three family members and, in 2007, in pairs. In 2006, 35% of the tourism was Mexican regional tourists, 54% was Mexican national tourists, with a low 11% being foreign.

In 2007, there was only a one or two point increase in national and regional tourists and the foreign tourist percentage stayed the same. About 50% of the international tourism comes from the United States.

I’ve made this point often in my articles that the city of Guanajuato is not a resort town. It is not like the West and East coast Mexican cities. Nor is it like San Miguel de Allende. These towns have become dependent upon the tourist money and regard the foreigner as a source of income.

How you will be treated in one of these resort towns that has been traditionally dependent upon the foreign tourist’s dollars or euros will be radically different from how you will be treated in a town whose tourist income is predominately from Mexican regional and national tourists. To put it in the words of one American woman who actually moved to San Miguel de Allende, “This is like living on a cruise ship. There is something planned to do every moment.”

The city of Guanajuato, or the rest of the state for that matter, is not like that at all. In Guanajuato, you will see how real Mexicans live and work in their ordinary everyday lives in a city that has history and culture oozing out of every cobblestone. If you expect to be entertained like in the resort towns, look elsewhere.

However, having said that, Guanajuato is a traveler’s dreamland to visit. That, I suppose, largely depends on your motive.

Of those surveyed, 7% to 10% came to Guanajuato in 2007 to visit family; 4% to 7% came for business; 6% to 8% for historical significance; 2% to 6% ventured here for ecotourism; 65% to 78% came just for a little R & R-Rest and Relaxation.

And, let me just say that Rest and Relaxation is what the average Joe and Jane American needs in times like these. If your American life has become something unrecognizable and transformed into something you would rather not even think about, then Guanajuato is the cure for what ails your hectic existence.

Five Steps To Maximize A Guanajuato Vacation

Think creatively: You can’t possibly find a much-needed cure for your stress in Guanajuato if you try to have a whirlwind rush through the city and state.

1. Guanajuato is absorbed and not so much seen. Take time to sit and smell the foods cooking in El Jardin; listen to the music, the children playing, the donkeys braying, or the vendors hawking their wares; feel the textures of the serapes, scarves, and whatever else catches your attention.

2. Don’t fret over your lodging. Be willing to stay anywhere. Staying in the historical center is not what it is cracked up to be. If you are planning a Restful and Relaxing vacation, staying in the noise-filled El Jardin is not necessarily what you will want. Try to book a hotel outside the historical center and nowhere near churches where you will be serenaded with bell ringing virtually around the clock. An apartment vacation rental is often the better choice.

3. Be willing to limit eating out from one to three meals for your entire vacation. If you find lodging in an apartment or hostel with cooking facilities, it would broaden your cultural horizons immensely to shop in the local markets for fresh foods you can cook on your own. It is a lifesaver on your pocketbook. My wife and I employ this tactic almost always when we travel through the country. Eating out can be a budget killer.

4. To minimize the financial impact on your savings, watch the airfares like your life depends on it. If you become a little pre-vacation obsessed, you can catch a deal on the flight to Mexico. My wife is liable to check three to four times a day when we are planning trips to catch the best prices. Or, consider driving to Mexico if you live within a one or two state’s distance from the border. It isn’t as hard as you think it might be. We are getting feedback from articles and forums that more and more Americans (and even some Canadians) choose the driving options. (Check the search engines for current restrictions and documents needed to drive into Mexico.)

5. Mexico is still a relative safe place to vacation. You have to put on your best “Big City Safety” thinking caps and play it safe the entire time. For reasons totally unknown, even to God, a lot of Gringos will come to Mexico, and especially Guanajuato, acting as though they’ve crossed over into the Promised Land of Safety and Virtue. I have not only personally witnessed this behavior in both tourists and American expatriates, but have a friend who is a long-time resident of the city who was robbed. She was not only relieved of her cash but was also beaten up in the process. She thought it was safe and secure to walk home at about three in the morning.

This is a serious issue. I cannot explain why Gringos come to Mexico and commit careless and dangerous behaviors that they would not do back home in Anywhere, America. They would not try walking home in the wee hours of the morning in almost any city in America and yet when they come here, they suddenly think they can do this and get by with it.

Don’t walk back to your hotel at hours of the night where you are most likely to be robbed; don’t visit ATM machines in the late hours; don’t do anything here that you wouldn’t do back home. If it feels dangerous it probably is, even in Guanajuato.

And, if you worry about all the news reports of Narco-Traffickers in Mexico, Guanajuato is still relatively safe from that source of organized crime. The point is to play it safe and smart and you will most likely come out smelling like a rose and have good experiences to tell your friends when you get back home.

The Authentic Mexico

Some people bristle at the phrase “authentic Mexico.” They often scream at me something akin to, “What is that supposed to mean?”

What it means is a Mexico that has largely resisted the Americanization attempts of the Resort Moguls and has done things and continues doing things its own way.

Recently, Guanajuato has “acquired” a Starbucks. Now, why anyone would want to come to Mexico and drink a four-dollar, or more, specialty coffee from America is beyond me and I am wont for an explanation. But, Americanization is coming to Guanajuato as it has infiltrated the resort areas of Mexico.

Still, Guanajuato is not a resort (yet) and is full of regular Mexicans going about their regular lives trying to eek out a regular living. History, culture, and Mexican life are worth more to me to see and experience than being entertained with a Cruise Ship agenda. Guanajuato can indeed be a dreamland vacation.

Let Guanajuato be the place you spend your next vacation!

Getting married? There are plenty of wonderful destinations for your honeymoon. But how are you gone get there? Did you ever think of a cruise ship? Believe me – it’s the best way to start your honeymoon. In fact it is the best way to start your marriage!

Every year, thousands of couples get married. If you’re planning your wedding, it is likely that you’ll plan a honeymoon as well. Honeymoons are often looked upon as vacations. In a sense, they are. But there are two major differences. Number one: romance is in the air. Number two: no kids. The bride, the groom and plenty of time. That makes honeymoons fun, exciting and memorable.

As previously mentioned, you have a number of different options when it comes to planning your honeymoon. Many newlyweds schedule their honeymoons at popular beaches, ski resorts, or other secluded areas. Did you know that you can also have a honeymoon aboard a cruise ship? Cruise ships are increasing in popularity, but still many individuals do not consider them as a vacation option. And that’s a shame.

You’ll be amazed!

One of the reasons why cruise ships are rarely thought about when selecting a vacation destination, let alone a honeymoon, is because of their cost. A cruise is considered to be expensive. Well, I´ll let you in on a little secret. They don´t have to be. The competition in the cruise line industry is killing. If you play your card smart, you can be the one that benefits. Do a Google search on discount cruise ship tickets and you´ll be amazed!

Those discount tickets are usually sold fast. So here is the rule. First of all decide where you wane go and set your budget. Then sit down and do your homework on the computer (or with the help of a travel agent). Once you see an offer that fits your needs, do not hesitate. Jump on it and celebrate. You just made a dream reality!

Take it from a pro

Let me raise another question. Are cruises actually pricy? It is important to examine the activities available onboard and the length of the cruise. The longer the cruise and the more services available, the more expensive tickets are likely to be. If you take the time to figure out all the services that are included and the cost of overnight accommodations, you may see that cruises aren’t all that expensive after all. Do the math and – again – you’ll be surprised.

Once you’ve made the decision to spend your honeymoon onboard a cruise liner, you’ll have to book reservations. When examining cruise ship destinations, look for the possibility for romance. As your honeymoon is supposed to be a romantic and relaxing time, you’ll want to select destinations that will keep that spirit alive. Those destinations are all over the world. But take it from a pro: for newlyweds the Caribbean is the place to go. There are over 7.000 islands. Pick a couple. No matter what islands you’ll be sailing for, there will be sandy white beaches, the friendliest people you can think of and lots of rum. You can’t go wrong here.

Amorous and intimate

Before I forget: take a close look at the type of cruise you select. Most cruise lines have ships that are targeted to seniors, risk seekers or families. Stay away from the last two mentioned. Remember: you are searching a private, amorous and intimate setting. Hard to find whit kids all over the swimming pool or adventure junkies bungee jumping from the upper decks…

It used to be that ocean-crossing vessels were the primary means to getting people from place to place at sea. Now they are hardly used and instead replaced with cruise ships. Just like the ocean-crossing vessel, the cruise ship takes its time going across the ocean. Since air travel is so much faster, crossing by water is used more for relaxation and enjoyment rather than as quick transportation.

To raise interest in the cruise ship as transportation, the ocean-going vessels would leisurely take people on southern cruises in the winter. The first of the trans-Atlantic ships to take people on southern cruises during the cold season on the North Atlantic was the Hamburg-America Line.

Another thing that got the cruise ship more attention was the television show, “The Love Boat.” This T.V. show used the Pacific Princess ship from the Princess Cruise Line. With the popularity that “The Love Boat” brought, the cruise industry began to soar around the 1980s. The famous T.V. show demonstrated that even ordinary individuals could enjoy spending time on a cruise ship for a vacation. Now that the cruise ship was for more than the rich and famous, all types of cruises became available in order to meet the desires of all types of people. Between 2001 and 2006 there have been about eight or nine cruise ships added each year.

Some people would love to visit the Arctic and Antarctic and couldn’t previously afford the means to do so. Now with the cruise ship being so accessible, people can enjoy trips to the Caribbean, to Alaska, and around Mexico.

A Relaxing Journey

Over time the popularity of the cruise ship causes the cruise industry to start using larger cruise ships. Now being on a cruise ship is like staying in a floating hotel considering most cruise ships can hold about 3000 passengers. This number doesn’t even include the large staff needed to take care of the passengers and the cruise ship. When you really dish out the money, you can get on a cruise ship that has more crew members than passengers.

The thing that the cruise ship is known best for is its amazing cuisines that are served 24 hours a day. With so much food to serve, the cruise ship has to have the space to store and cook it. Sometime in a week long trip you’ll find that more than ten tons of beef and almost 30,000 eggs are used in meals.

Although people think of the cruise ship as a place to vacation, the cruise ship has had many other uses as well. During the hurricanes in the Gulf Coast in 2005, cruise ships were called to house displaced victims. Three of the Princess Cruise Line ships were contracted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to house hurricane victims temporarily. Cruise ships have also been used as a place for people to stay during the 2004 Olympics, since there weren’t enough hotel rooms available.

So you’ve heard how great cruise vacations are, and now you’ve decided to take to the high seas for a fortnight of luxury and pampering. But there’s a lot to think about. So before you select a cruise line, a cruise ship or even get in touch with a travel agent, there are certain issues that are vital to consider.

1) Who is going on the cruise?

Although this question should be easy to answer, it can have a bearing on the type of cruise line and ship that you ultimately choose.

If you and your partner want to take a relaxing cruise, there are many ships that are aimed at couples. In fact some cruise ships actively discourage or even ban people from taking children onboard.

If you will be cruising as a couple, it’s also important to consider the dining situation. On ships with assigned seating, you will have to specify the size of table that you want. However, on many ships, tables for two are in short supply, so if this is an important issue, this may influence your choice of cruise line and ship. Just make sure that you make this clear to your travel agent or the cruise line when booking.

On the other hand, if you want to take your children or travel with the rest of your extended family, there are certain cruise lines and ships within cruise lines that are specifically tailored with family vacations in mind.

2) How much have you got to spend?

It’s possible to find a cruise vacation to suit almost any budget. So before you go any further it’s important to work out how much you’re willing to spend on your holiday.

But as a general rule, you’ll need to set aside at least $150 per person per day to cover the cost of your cruise. However, bigger cabins in more luxurious ships can cost many times this figure.

However, it is possible to get more for your money if you;

a) Book early: Most cruise lines are willing to give generous discounts if you book your cruise 6-12 months in advance.

b) Book late: Likewise, if you book within 2 months of setting sail, most cruise lines will give you hefty discounts to fill the remaining cabins.

3) How long have you got?

The number of days that you want your vacation to last will determine the type and location of cruises that are available to you.

If you only have a few days, the main option is a one port cruise. This means that the ship leaves port sails around the sea/ocean for two or three days and then returns to the same port. The ship doesn’t call at any other ports, but it does give you a few days at sea. This is a good way to get the feel for a certain cruise ship, or even cruising in general.

If you have a week to spare, this gives you more choices. If you live in the US, this gives you the choice of Hawaii, Alaska, Florida, Mexico or even a Caribbean cruise. If you live in Europe this will give you access to the mediterranean, north africa, or even a nordic cruise.

Alternatively, if you want to increase the number of locations available, you could fly to and from the start/finish location of your cruise or take a one way cruise either flying to the start location or flying home after disembarkation.

If you have two weeks or longer, you can cruise almost any part of the world.

4) What time of the year?

The time of year that you take your cruise will have a major affect on two issues;

a) The Price: As with all forms of travel, your holiday will cost more during the peak season. In contrast, most cruises are cheaper in the spring or fall.

Traditionally, the winter was considered the high season for Caribbean destinations, but due to the weight of supply and demand (people who have to take their vacation during the summer) the summertime costs are almost on a par with the cost of a winter Caribbean cruise.

b) The Locations Available: The time of year that you take your cruise will also determine the locations that are available. Although this won’t make much difference to the more mainstream locations such as the Caribbean or the Mediterranean, certain places have a distinct cruise season.

If you want to go to Alaska or northern Europe, the main cruise season lasts from May till September.

For Antartica, the season is even shorter, running from November to February.

Although the tropical regions are in season all year, there is a great variation in the amount of rainfall throughout the year. Locations such as the Caribbean will have less rain during the summer months and more rain during the winter months.

And finally, although not a restriction as such, some people prefer to avoid places that may be affected by the hurricane season. If a cruise ship encounters a storm it will alter its route to avoid it, which means you may miss certain places that you wanted to visit.

5) What part of the world do you want to visit?

You can cruise almost anywhere in the world, even landlocked countries are often available to explore through river cruises. So it’s no surprise that this is one of the hardest decisions for cruise newcomers to make.

The amount of days that you have for your vacation will narrow your options, but beyond that, consider other issues, such as;

If you want to or have to take your vacation at a certain time of the year, which locations are available?

If you particularly want to use a certain cruise line, which locations do their ships visit?

What type of weather and climate do you prefer?

Are there any particular landmarks that you want to visit?

Are there any activities or adventures that you want to experience?

Now all you have to do it to get in touch with your travel agent.

Me and my family want to on a vacation over new years. We can’t decide if we want to go to a resort in either cancun or the bahamas, or go on a caribbean cruise. Which one would you do and why? And if anyone knows about new years in cancun, bahamas, or on a cruise ship please let me know?

Ive been on a cruise ship that went to st thomas, st maarten and the bahamas, and I’ve also been to a resort in the mayan riviera, and ive also been to cancun. If I had to choose I would say go on a cruise because they are so much more fun than a resort. Not that resorts arent fun, theres just so much more going on on a cruise, and its fun being able to visit numerous places on one vacation. Cancun however is an extremly fun city to be in, and the culture is just amazing there. I went to coco bongo and that was the highlight of my trip in cancun, also went ziplining and swimming through the grotos, and snorkelling the reef. If you have any specific questions I can answer, just message me, or post some more details and I’ll follow this question.

I met her 3 months ago at work, she came in to buy some stuff and I regretted not asking her out. I didn’t see her at all until 3 weeks ago when I bumped into her at a skytrain and I asked her for her number and to hangout. I thought that it was fate that led me to this but I was so wrong. She told me from before hand that she wasn’t looking for a relationship since she just got out of a bad one but we still went for a coffee. At the end of the hangout, she mentioned going to work at a cruise ship since she has no attachments with anyone yet. I wanted to tell her how I felt so I called her right after and told her. She said that I’m really sweet and a really nice guy but she wasn’t lying about getting out of a bad relationship. She’s been with 2 guys over the past 8 years and now that she’s single she feels free and independant to travel around the world. She kept apologising and told me that I will find someone better than her and that she was flattered because I told her the reasons why I was so crazy about her. She’s so perfect, everything that I’m looking for in a woman. She doesn’t like to shop, isn’t materialistic, doesn’t like putting makeup on, really mature and experienced in life and really, really nice. The nicest person that I’ve ever come across *she’s 28 and I’m 20(. I can’t stand girls my age, they’re too immature, spoiled and unprepared for the real world. She even mentioned that it won’t be a good idea for us to hangout anymore since I’ll become more attached and she’ll feel even more guilty. I’m good with moving on from rejections but this one has hit me bad. How do I move on from this? =(.

First of all, not all women your age are immature, I’m 21 and smarter and classier then most older women I know. Second, it sound like you have a school boy crush. 3 to 6 weeks is not nearly enough time to realize that she is miss perfect. It seems like you were expecting too much from the beginning, and that’s why it hurts so much now. The fact that you told her how you feel is great, at least you will never regret not telling her. But truth is she is ready to move on with life, and you forming an attraction to her just makes it all the more difficult. I think you pictured her as perfect because she had a lot of ideal qualities you look for, and she must also be attractive. But in time you will grow and realize that other women are out there with all the same great attributes so hopefully you will find it easier to move on. Good luck!

I am planning a cruise vacation for December. Does anyone know anything about Norwegian Cruise Lines? I’ve been on Carnival and Royal Caribbean, but not Norwegian. The cruise would be on the Norwegian Dream that will go out of Houston, Texas. Is this a nice ship? Do they have good shows? How is the food? What are the cabins like? Any advice or suggestions will be appreciated.

I have been on many Norwegian ships, including twice on the Dream; once before it was stretched and once after. Norwegian was at one time my favorite cruise line until the line was bought by Star Cruises and they instituted the "Freestyle Cruising".

Now I do not recommend Norwegian because of their "freestyle" cruising. It means that you do not have to specify a dining option; don’t have a table and waiter assigned to you. It means you can go to dinner in the main dining room any time of the evening.

But it also means that you may be standing in line awaiting a table on some days (like we had to a couple times); not what you want on a cruise. Since you go when you want, you rarely get the same waiter and so never really get to know your waiter and he/she never learns what you prefer. The option to this being pushed on NCL is their optional dining which you must pay to use. The dining options can cost $10 to $20 a person for dinner each night; not what you want after paying for a cruise. Then optional restaurants are nice, including French, Sushi, Tex-Mex, Italian, steak house restaurants. But who wants to go pay to eat on a cruise ship where all the meals are supposed to be included. We always skipped the optional restaurants and just got to the main dining early.

The ship was a good one, not as new and modern as some of the newer NCL, Princess and RC ships. It is not one of the ships that has a majority balcony and suites cabins. But it has nice features. I don’t remember the shows and they change those periodically anyway.

Since Star took over NCL the line has an Asian flavor; Star is an Oriental company. Some of the performers and musicians were Asian and they had Karioke every evening. Not my cup of tea. You will enjoy, but it will be diferent from what you had on Carnival and RC.

Choosing your cruise is one of the most important steps of your cruise experience. Finding the best cruise agent is essential. Knowing which liner will best suit your needs, style, which destination ports will be of interest to you and when you should travel, are some of the many aspects which should be considered.

This is why a cruise agent is such an important part of your cruise vacation decision.

Below are just a few of the aspects that a good cruise agent will discuss with you during your cruise consultation. Be sure to make notes of any special questions you may have before you speak with them.

The Five W’s

1. Who: Knowing who is travelling is one of the more obvious questions but one which must be carefully considered. Are you a single traveler, a couple, a family, or a group? Are there small children traveling or would you prefer an adult only ship?

Would you prefer a younger or more mature onboard age group? These are some of the important factors which must be considered when selecting the right cruise ship, and some of the many things that your cruise agentwill discuss with you.

2. What Ship to Choose: Each luxury cruise line has many benefits and aspects that make it unique in the industry. Some ships are intimate vessels carrying approximately a hundred passengers, whereas others set sail with several hundred to over a thousand passengers.

The onboard atmosphere of some ships is more formal, with traditional dining venues, whereas others offer a more casual setting with an open dining experience.
Matching you with the ship that will best suit your needs and style should be your first priority. Let the cruise agent help you to choose the ship that is right for you.

3. Where: With over 65% of the world being covered by water, it seems as though the “Where” possibilities are truly endless. Where does one start? How do you choose? Well, one way is by knowing when you can travel to each location and what time of year the itineraries are offered.

Also, what do the destinations offer and are the ports of interest to you? Some of the more common destination choices are: the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, the South Pacific, the Mediterranean, the Baltic, and Africa & Asia. And for the brave what about the titanic route, you may see some nice icebergs.

Your cruise agent should be happy to discuss the many options being offered. In addition, once you have decided on your cruise destination, a good cruise agent will provide you with in-depth information on pre-cruise and post-cruise stays, as well as private shore excursion options.

4. When: When to cruise usually depends on one of two things: when you are able to go or when the itinerary you are interested in taking is being offered. The first consideration, when you are able to go, is easily determined.

Once you establish your time frame, your cruise specialist is able to provide you with a selection of cruises being offered at that time. If you personal availability is flexible, often times, the second consideration, when the itinerary you are interested in taking is being offered, is another way of choosing when to go, as certain itineraries are only offered at certain times of the year.

Your cruise agent can help you to select the best time to travel to your destination and which itineraries are being offered.

5. Why are you traveling: The question is, far too often, overlooked by travelers, and is one of the more important questions to consider. Are you traveling for rest and relaxation?

Are you traveling to learn about a specific destination or culture? Are you interested in a learning or life enrichment experience? Or is it a special occasion (i.e. a honeymoon, an anniversary, a family reunion, etc.)?

These scenarios are just a few of the many reasons that you may be considering a cruise and knowing “Why” you are traveling, will help your cruise specialist match you with the cruse line, ship and itinerary that will best suit your needs.

As you can see, there are many factors that go into the planning of your cruise vacation. Researching, defining, and refining all of these variables is why your cruise agent is such an important part of your decision and selection process.

Hope you have a wonderful cruise. By the way,do you get seasick? The chances on a cruise are very slim. However it is always advisable to take some sea sick pills with you; just in case.

So we’re still on a cruise, on our way to some enchanted land. It’s a great weather today, and the air is warm, and so are everyone’s smiles. Here’s more of what you can expect in a ship cruise.

Onboard Activities

All in all, it’s virtually impossible to be bored on a cruise ship. There are ongoing activities throughout the day, which are usually free of charge. Contests, games, bingo, clay shooting, dance, Tai Chi and golf lessons, karaoke and sing-a-longs, etc. Swimming or relaxing in a spa or hot tub.

Children and Young Teenagers on Board

All mainstream cruise ships offer organized programmes that cater to the entire family. These programmes are usually categorized by age, which include age-appropriate activities.

Not Inclue in Cruise’s Fees

Tips

Beverages

Spa Treatments

Hairdressers

Dry cleaning

Laundry services

Shore Excursions

Guidelines to Extra Expenses

When paying for your cruise the tips will NOT be included, although you can pre-pay your tips if the cruise liner will agree to it. Some cruise lines automatically add the recommended tip amount to your account at the time of sailing. You can decide to adjust this amount based on the service received.

The onboard hospitality crew and general staffing crew earn much of their money in tips. Make no mistake, they do EARN IT – their shifts are long and they will go out of their way to make you feel welcome and well-looked after on your holiday. You won’t find better waiters, stewards, bartenders, and cabin staff anywhere.

Most cruise lines have ‘recommended tipping rates’ that can start at $10.00 per day per guest. These tips are then distributed among the personnel that service your every need for the included cruise items such as stateroom stewards, waiters, bartenders, and general cabin staff.

Spa Treatments

All cruise ships offer excellent technicians for spa treatments such as massage, facials, waxing, manicure, and pedicures. Hairdressers are available as well. Of course, all of these are extra, but are they worth it, and you’ll always look your best without much effort. Another tip, book in as soon as you get on board for your first service and you can book ongoing services easily or you’ll miss out. These services fill up very quickly.

Shore Excursions

Unfortunately, shore excursions are not included. There are dozens of things to do when your ship docks at the beautiful exotic destinations. Don’t let your next holiday turn into a fiasco. Cruise lines make it extremely easy for you to book excursions on-line even before you board the ship. If you prefer you can book shore excursions once you board.

The Best Hints to Remember

Budget for your on board expenses and include the spending money for any on shore shopping excursions.

Keep track of your spending by retaining all receipts

Check your account balance each day.

Book your shore excursions ahead of time so you won’t be disappointed.

Take care when going on tour alone. Even though most people on shore rely on tourists for their income, it’s easy to become prey to misadventure.

Don’t purchase any foodstuffs that are suspicious. Rather be safe than sorry.

Don’t buy any food that cannot be consumed before you reach your departure port.

Don’t buy anything on shore if you believe it may be confiscated by customs once you are home.

The best tip to remember is to check everything with your travel agent before paying for your cruise.
